Former FBI Director James Comey has spent months trying to portray himself as a “good guy” and a victim of President Donald Trump.
But now it’s looking like Comey may be in the middle of one of the largest political scandals in modern times.
And he has A LOT of explaining to do.
Rumors have been circulating for months that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under Comey’s leadership, helped fund the so-called “Trump Dossier.”
The document was filled with scandalous, discredited allegations against Trump and was meant to destroy his credibility before Trump ever took office.
We’ve since learned that the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign helped steer cash toward Fusion GPS, the firm that oversaw the dossier.
Now, it looks like the FBI got in on the action, too.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein testified before Congress yesterday. And he was asked directly whether the FBI helped fund the dossier to discredit Trump.
But it wasn’t what Rosenstein said that has Americans concerned… it’s what he didn’t say.
He didn’t say no.
Rep. Ron DeSantis of Florida asked Rosenstein directly if the FBI paid for the dossier.
Rosenstein tried to dodge the question, saying it would be more appropriate for him to give the answer to the House Intelligence Committee.
When DeSantis pressed the issue and asked Rosenstein whether he knew the answer to the question, Rosenstein admitted he did.
“I believe I know the answer,” Rosenstein said.
Presumably, if Rosenstein was in a position of deny the FBI’s involvement (and save the agency some embarrassment) he would have.
But he didn’t.
It’s the latest evidence that Comey’s FBI was knee-deep in an effort to ruin Trump’s political career.
Media reports surfaced earlier this year that the FBI had struck a deal with Christopher Steele, the former British spy hired by Fusion GPS, for Steele to continue his work on the dossier.
If that’s indeed proven true, it would represent unprecedented interference by a government agency in a U.S. presidential election.
Rosenstein seems to know the answer… and let’s hope the House Intelligence Committee eventually gets it out of him.
But it’s high time that Comey returned to Washington and started answering some questions.
Because it’s becoming clear that Comey wasn’t just running the FBI – he was trying to play God.
And we deserve to know the lengths that he went to… and whether he may have broken the law in the process.
