Democrats are terrified.
Terrified of the next Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who is bound to surface.
Not really. Ocasio-Cortez came onto the political scene guns blazing and ready to ruin anyone who stood in the way of her ultra-radical policies.
Luckily, House Democrats seemed to have learned their lesson quickly, and have put some measures in place so what happened to Joseph Crowley doesn’t happen to them.
Newsmax reported, that House Democrats are amassing massive campaign holdings to scare off any potential progressive upstart’s eager to get their hands on their job.
According to the report, 16 of 41 incumbent House Democrats who could potentially face 2020 primary opponents have already gathered over $1 million in campaign funds. And data from the Federal Election Commission shows that over the first half of the year 20 have managed to gather $500,000 in this time alone.
But these Democrats have A LOT more work cut out for them.
Monica Klein a New York consultant that works with progressive Democrats noted, “If you don’t have the money to fight an air way, you fight a ground war… You try to out-organize your opponent and have those conversations at the doors, on the phone, face to face.”
The question is, will the early fundraising make a dent in the damage these progressive movements can make?
Take the bartender-turned-Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for example. After a short campaign, she toppled and beat out 10-term veteran Joseph Crowley, despite Crowley being seen as the next House Speaker… Not to mention, Crowley spent over $3 MILLION times what Ocasio-Cortez could get her hands on.
Upsets like AOC’s are known to be rare… at least until now.
“My advice to any incumbent in this volatile environment: Take nothing for granted,” stated former Representative Steve Israel.
