Former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders wants you to believe he’s a different kind of politician.
He’s spent more than a year blasting former rivals Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump for chasing big campaign checks and allegedly colluding with foreign governments.
What. A. Hypocrite.
Sanders has just been caught red-handed violating federal election law.
And guess what he’s been accused of?
Chasing big campaign checks. And colluding with a foreign government.
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is ordering Sanders to pay over $14,000 in fines for illegally accepting contributions from the Australian Labor Party (ALP), which paid for volunteers to fly across the globe to volunteer on his campaign, according to a ruling filed earlier this month.
According to The Daily Caller, the FEC dropped the hammer on Sanders after a February 2016 Project Veritas video surfaced showing Australian nationals working for the Sanders campaign on the dime of the Australian taxpayer-funded ALP.
Republican and former New Hampshire House speaker William O’Brien filed a complaint with the FEC shortly after Project Veritas made the footage public, alleging the ALP had made “prohibited foreign contributions” to the Sanders campaign.
The FEC ruled that the Sanders campaign accepted about $25,000 in in-kind donations from the Australians.
While volunteering with the Sanders campaign, the Australians engaged in political activities “including encouraging voter attendance at campaign events, recruiting volunteers, canvassing with volunteers, and planning events,” according to the FEC.
Sanders and his team are of course playing dumb.
A Sanders campaign spokesperson told VICE News that the campaign accepted the fine to avoid an expensive legal fight with the FEC but noted that it did not admit to any wrongdoing.
“In order to avoid a long and expensive fight with the FEC over the technical status of these young people, the campaign agreed to pay the FEC a small settlement but did not agree that it broke any rules,” the Sanders spokesperson said.
Really? Seems fishy the campaign did ‘nothing’ wrong, but was so quick to pay the fine to make this all go away!
Looks like Uncle Bernie would do anything – and take anything – to help push his socialist agenda!
